چکیده

In geological minerals, tracks of fragments from spontaneous fission of U nuclei accumulate over geological time scales and are widely used for fission-track dating and thermochronology [1, 2]. In our recent studies, we tackled the problem how solids exposed to energetic heavy ions cope with the simultaneous exposure of external pressure. This combination of ion irradiation and pressure is suitable for simulating the conditions fission fragments experience in the interior of the Earth [3]. A single crystal of Durango apatite was pressurized to 10.5 GPa between two ~1.4-mm thick diamonds of a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and irradiated at the SIS with 5×10 cm Kr ions of initial energy 106 MeV/u corresponding to 25 MeV/u at the sample site. For comparison, we also exposed non-pressurized apatite samples to U ions of 11.1 MeV/u at the UNILAC.

Nanoscale manipulation of the properties of solids at high pressure with relativistic heavy ions.

High-pressure and high-temperature phases show unusual physical and chemical properties, but they are often difficult to 'quench' to ambient conditions. Here, we present a new approach, using bombardment with very high-energy, heavy ions accelerated to relativistic velocities, to stabilize a high-pressure phase. In this case, Gd(2)Zr(2)O(7), pressurized in a diamond-anvil cell up to 40 GPa, was...

Effects of hydrothermal treatment on the properties of nanoapatite crystals

We report the synthesis of nanoapatite crystals via a hydrothermal reaction of hydroxyapatite precipitates. The impact of the reaction conditions on the properties of the crystals obtained were evaluated. The hydrothermal reaction that takes place markedly affected the crystallinity, morphology, and size of the nanoapatite crystals formed. High crystallinity and large crystal size were obtained...

Electron-irradiation-induced phase segregation in crystalline and amorphous apatite: A TEM study

Single crystals of natural F-rich apatite and 800 keV Kr21 ion-beam–amorphized apatite were irradiated by an electron beam in a transmission electron microscope over a range of beam energies and beam currents. Irradiation of crystalline apatite using a high current density (16 A/cm2) caused the precipitation of cubic CaO from the crystalline apatite matrix. Using a lower beam current (1.6 A/cm2...

Study of Dehydrogenation of Pressure-induced NaBH4 Structures Using Calculated NQCC Parameters

Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy is an accurate method for determination of electric charge distribution around quadrupolar nuclei. Using ab initio computational methods, it is possible to calculate the Nuclear Quadrupole Coupling Constants (NQCCs) with high accuracy and obtain the useful structural information by using these parameters. Sodium Borohydride, NaBH4, is a metal hydr...

Improved fission-track length measurements using ion irradiation

Apatite [Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl)] is a common mineral in rocks that contains ~10 ppm U. U disintegrates by spontaneous fission and the fission fragments produce linear damage trails of ~20 μm length and 5-10 nm width. The lattice damage along such a fission track is repaired at elevated temperatures, leading to a gradual decrease of its etchable length. Since fresh tracks are formed as existing tracks ...
